The Senate committee for Human Rights on Wednesday approved a draft bill declaring 18 years as the minimum age of marriage.
The bill to declare 18 years as the minimum age was presented in the Senate Committee for Human Rights. Senator Mustafa Nawaz was heading the committee. The committee approved the draft bill to raise the minimum age of marriage to 18 years.
Earlier, the minimum age to marry in Pakistan was 16 years. Senator Usman Kakar remarked that early marriages are one of the main reasons behind the rising child death ratio in Pakistan. According to the senator Usman Kakar, “ If the minimum age to acquire the National Identity Card( NIC) is 18 years then the minimum age for the marriage should also be the same”
During the discussion, Human Rights Minister said, “ The government has no issue in determining 18 years as the minimum age of marriage.”
“The draft will be presented before the parliament next month and will also be forwarded to the federal cabinet for approval” Mazari added.
Furthermore, the Human Rights ministers said; “ No law will be passed which is against Islam or the Shariah. We have to take care of both the boys and girls.
